Best Time to Visit the Biševo Blue Cave: Hour, Month and Weather

The Blue Cave has two clocks: the sun’s and the wind’s. Get both right and the water under your boat glows electric blue from beneath; get either wrong and you have paid €24 to sit in a dark sea cave, or not got in at all. Here is how to get both right.

Short version: late morning, in a northerly, any month from June to September — and the way to guarantee the hour is a boat that leaves early. The Blue Cave & 5 Islands tour from Split departs at 8am and reaches Biševo first, before the rest of the day’s islands, for precisely this reason.

The hour: roughly 10:30 to 13:00

The colour is not on the walls. Sunlight enters through an underwater opening on the cave’s seaward side and lights the water from below, so the effect needs the sun high and the sky clear. The reliable window is about 10:30 to 13:00, with the strongest colour around 11 to noon in midsummer. Earlier and later you get a softer, deeper blue; late afternoon you get a cave.

That is why every mainland tour leaves Split at 8–9am and Hvar at about 10:15–10:30, why they all put Biševo first, and why they all arrive at Mezuporat in the same half-hour — see below.

The month: June and September beat July and August

The cave operates from 1 April to 31 October. Within that:

• June and early September — high sun, warm sea, and queues at Mezuporat measured in minutes rather than the 60–90 minutes that July and August middays can bring. The ticket is €24 from 20 June and €18 before it, so the first three weeks of June are also the cheapest bright-light weeks.
• July and August — the strongest light and the longest waits; the shared boats simply cannot move the wave through faster. Go anyway if this is your summer, but leave from Vis if you can (the island carrier’s fast-entry card matters most in these weeks).
• April, May, October — €18 tickets, empty coves, softer colour, and more days lost to weather. Fine for a Vis-based visit with a flexible day; risky as a one-shot from Split.

The wind: it closes on sunny days

The cave shuts on southerly wind and swell — the jugo — because the low entrance (about a metre and a half) becomes impassable, and residual swell can seal it under a clear blue sky. Northerlies, the bura and the afternoon maestral, usually leave it open. Operators check conditions each morning; when the cave is closed they reroute to the Green Cave on Ravnik, Stiniva and the Budikovac lagoon, and if the whole day is called off the free cancellation on every tour on this site applies. Two rules follow: book the cave early in your trip, not on the last day, and read the forecast for wind direction, not just sunshine.

The queue: why 11am is crowded and how to beat it

Every mainland boat aims for the same window, so Mezuporat sees a wave at about 10:30–11:30. Your options:
