Blue Cave from Komiža and Vis: the Local Way In

Everyone who has stood in the Mezuporat queue in August has watched a small local boat from Komiža slide past the wave, and wondered. This is the guide to that boat — the cheapest, shortest and calmest way to the Blue Cave, and the answer to “can you visit the Blue Cave without a tour?” (yes, from Komiža).

The bookable version is the shared speedboat from Vis town — 5.0 from 152 verified guests, from about $116 — whose operator, as an island carrier, holds a fast-entry card for the cave.

Komiža: the taxi-boat hop

Komiža is the fishing harbour on the west coast of Vis, and Biševo is its neighbour: 15–20 minutes by taxi boat across the strait to Mezuporat, roughly €35 per person plus the cave ticket. You buy the ticket at the Mezuporat reception (cash or card), wait for a licensed small boat, and go in — the whole outing is about two hours including the queue. Mikule 1 in Komiža and a real-time boarding schedule on the modraspilja.hr app, which is worth checking before you leave the harbour.

The catch is obvious: you have to be on Vis. The ferry from Split to Vis town is a separate booking and a couple of hours each way, and Komiža is a bus ride across the island from the ferry port. As a day trip from Split it does not beat the 5-islands boats; as part of a night or two on Vis it is unbeatable.

Vis town: the local speedboat

If you are staying in Vis town rather than Komiža, the shared speedboat around Vis, Biševo and the Blue Cave starts at 8am from the town marina — pickup anywhere inside it — and runs the military tunnels at Parja bay first, then Biševo, then the Green Cave on Ravnik and swim stops around the island. What makes it different from every mainland boat is the operator’s own explanation of the ticket line: the cave tickets are excluded so you can choose on the day; the skipper buys them with the operator’s fast-entry card, you pay him the normal price, and because they are a carrier from Vis their guests get their turn to visit the cave faster. Green Cave tickets are paid to the Green Cave team on arrival, and there you can swim in.

What it costs, honestly

When the local way is the right way

• You are staying on Vis or Komiža.
• It is July or August and the queue frightens you — the island carrier’s card matters most in those weeks.
• You want the cave without a nine-hour day.
• You are watching the wind: on Vis you can wait for a bura morning; from Split you get one shot.

When it is not: you are based in Split or Hvar with no plan to overnight on Vis. Then the Split or Hvar speedboats are the honest choice, ticket in hand.
