Vis: The Island That Played Kalokairi

In September 2017 a film crew took over Croatia’s furthest inhabited Adriatic island, and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again turned Vis into fictional Kalokairi. The tours have said “Mamma Mia island” ever since. Here’s what that actually means on the ground - and why the island out-acts its cameo.

The real filming sites

Komiža - the fishing town on the west coast - carries most of the film’s Croatia footage: the waterfront, the lanes, the harbor cameos. Stiniva’s cliff-gapped cove appears in its full amphitheater glory, and the quieter bays of Barjoška and Barjaca filled the beach scenes. There is no set to visit and no tour program to buy - the locations are simply the island’s own best corners, walkable from Komiža or seen from the water on the 5-island days.
