Stiniva: The Cove Behind the Cliff Gap

Voted Europe's best beach in 2016: a pebble cove sealed behind a cliff gap barely a boat wide. How the 5-island tours see it, the goat-path truth, and when it's actually good.

Updated August 2026

From the open sea Stiniva is a trick: a sheer limestone wall with a slot barely wider than a launch, and behind it - only visible once your bow lines up with the gap - a white-pebble amphitheater that European Best Destinations voted the best beach in Europe in 2016. The award changed the cove’s life, and an honest guide starts there.

How people actually see it

From the water - the way the 5-island tours do it: the boats slow at the gap for the reveal and, sea permitting, anchor for a swim outside or nose through. It is the low-effort, high-image version and for most visitors the right one. From the land - a steep, loose, 20–30 minute goat path down from the road above (proper shoes, real sun, twice the effort back up). The path is why the cove never fully crowds even in August: the beach’s bouncer is gravity.

When it’s good, honestly

Morning light favors the gap; by midday in high summer the pebbles host everyone who survived the path plus every anchored swim stop. June and September are the cove at its best - warm sea, working light, room to float. On a south swell the gap becomes a washing machine and boats skip the stop; that’s the same swell that closes the Blue Cave, so the two disappointments at least travel together.

The footnote the brochures love

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again borrowed Stiniva’s amphitheater in its September 2017 Vis shoot - the island’s whole film story is its own guide. The cove was photogenic for a few million years first.
